Friday Event by Dr Kim Jae-hoon - The Chrysanthemum and the Society 5.0: A New Perspective to Reinterpret the Japanese Politics and Diplomacy in the 21st century.

The third Friday Event for the spring semester of 2022 was held by SIPA on Friday, April 22th. Dr Kim Jae-hoon is invited to deliver a talk on the topic of “The Chrysanthemum and the Society 5.0: A New Perspective to Reinterpret the Japanese Politics and Diplomacy in the 21st century”. Dr Yan Zhen was the moderator of the session.

Dr Kim started with an important introduction to Japan and then moved on to discussing how to better understand Japanese diplomacy in the 21st century in more detail. After that, he moved on to delve into the historical experiences of the Japanese society - Japanese studies in the western world (English-speaking World) as a logical starting point: Ruth Benedict (1887-1948). Next, he discussed the study for the multi-structural transformations of Japanese society in the Heisei era: from the perspectives of "the chrysanthemum" and "the Society 5.0". Finally, Dr. Kim summarized the political factors in five subcategories, the japanese politics and diplomacy: (1) Power dynamics; (2) Identity and ideology; (3) Internal and external threats; (4) Domestic politics; (5) Leadership.

The topic of the event was interesting while it contain explains in depth and in detail the understanding of Japan's diplomatic policy which created a great resonance between the students and they praised the efforts of Dr. Kim for the detailed and interesting topic. Dr Kim and Dr Yan both responded with patience and professionalism.

Dr Kim Jae-hoon recently joined SIPA early this semester. He has been traveling extensively to Japan and the United States of America to seek excellence and make himself a specialist in International Political Economics (IPE) and Japan studies.
